Overview

The Staff Engineer performs engineering design and analysis on projects and programs ensuring technical competence and compliance with all current codes and criteria. Assists with the preparation of permit applications, material testing, surveying, construction staking, drawing preparation, and computer aided design (CAD) work.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares engineering analysis, design, calculations, and reports for a portion or all of a project for review by a Project Manager.
  • Oversees geotechnical drilling in the field and collects samples based on project requirements.
  • Assigns, performs, and oversees lab testing and prepares geotechnical reports with recommendations.
  • Evaluates site soil conditions on construction projects and provides recommendations.
  • Prepares permit applications with local and state entities.
  • Coordinate utility clearance prior to geotechnical drilling.
  • Works with dynamic design teams including landscape architects, land use planners, attorneys, owners, and facility managers.
  • Performs construction assistance related tasks including reviewing concrete and asphalt mix designs, visiting job sites, reviewing technicians’ daily reports, and coordinating with contractors, clients and owners.
  • Assists with the preparation of technical proposals, cost estimates, plans, technical specifications, and reports, including day to day correspondences.
  • Attends and participates in project meetings.
  • Stays current on legal and industry regulations.
  • May assist in performing survey and construction materials testing tasks.
  • Participates in continuing education / career advancement training.
  • Performs other related duties or responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Formal Education, Licenses and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Michigan E.I.T. | F.E. certification or in the process of obtaining certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license or can obtain one prior to employment.

 

Knowledge and Experience

  • 0-3 years of relevant civil engineering internships/experience- preferability in geotechnical engineering.
  • Understanding of basic geotechnical engineering principles, theories and methods.
  • Experience using AutoCAD preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of typical computer software programs used for civil engineering design and management (Microsoft Office, etc.)

  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently, prioritize workload and cope with tight timelines to meet all deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Proficient with the use of computers including spreadsheets, word processing, engineering software and ability to prepare electronic design calculation documents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on a project team.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and demonstrates good time-management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; complete assigned tasks efficiently and exercise sound engineering judgment.
  • Strong attention to detail and has aptitude for noticing errors on engineering designs.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. About half the work is performed in an office setting. The other half will be outdoors work year-round at sites including raw land developments, construction sites, roadways or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate CAD, computers and various pieces of office equipment.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.

 

Availability

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and overtime as required.

 

Travel

Travel will be required to respective job sites and is primarily local during the business day.  Occasionally, travel may be required to job sites in other states and would require overnight stay.
