Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Malacologist to join our team. This position is available as either full-time or part-time, and the successful candidate will have the flexibility to work from anywhere in Michigan or northeastern Ohio.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct freshwater mussel surveys in accordance with Michigan Freshwater Mussel Survey Protocols and Relocation Procedures for Rivers and Streams (May 2021, Version 3).
  • Identify and document species of mussels found during field surveys.
  • Follow established protocols for the relocation of mussels when necessary.
  • Participate in water quality assessments and provide expertise in the interpretation of data.
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop project scopes, goals, and timelines.
  • Develop cost proposals for assigned projects, ensuring accurate estimation of time, resources, and budget.

Qualifications

  • Must be familiar with Michigan Freshwater Mussel Survey Protocols and Relocation Procedures for Rivers and Streams, Version 3 (May 2021).
  • Must have successfully passed either the Ohio or Michigan Mussel Identification (ID) test.
  • Experience with water quality assessments is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Michigan's SQT or similar assessment tools is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to scope projects and develop cost proposals.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
